Why I love this game

Exercise and I: A love story: Part 1.

First off, I have no idea if anyone will actually read this but allow me to introduce myself. Hey, I’m Sean. Now, this is my first shot at writing for a blog so bear with me and I’ll try to keep it short. Here goes. It started when the doctor told my parents that exercise could help with my asthma. That was all my father needed to hear, as he took on the role as my first trainer, and by far the most influential. I tried just about every physical activity I could. Obviously I enjoyed some more than others, but the first lesson I learned was quitting was never acceptable. I would finish the season and if I wanted to try something different I could, but once we signed up that was that. A lesson I still find myself leaning on when things aren’t going my way. Running long distance is hard, especially at that age with asthma, so that wasn’t my thing. But I loved shorter distance, going all out, catching my breath, and doing it again. I didn’t realize at the time how much this was helping my breathing, but it was. I would go to the track with my coach,  Rocky soundtrack cassette and walkman in hand. We would start with some 100’s and work up to 400’s (one of my favorites) then try to string together as many laps as I could without stopping. I can still remember the first time I did 4 laps for a mile without stopping and my father was celebrating like only a proud father could. “You see! you see! I told you!” And he did, he told me that this thing wasn’t going to beat me and If I just kept working I would amaze myself. He was right. That wasn’t the end of asthma for me, but it was the moment I realized the power of exercise, hard work, and not just throwing in the towel when I got uncomfortable. Now I am not suggesting everyone with asthma go out and start running, do talk with your doctor first as there are different levels of severity and I am not qualified to speak on that. I am just sharing the day I fell in love with exercise…
